As a hub of world trade, the port symbolizes how Hamburg has benefited from globalization - and thus also from colonialism. Yet global trade relations are still characterized by neo-colonial power asymmetries that are hidden behind the dimensions of globalized freight shipping.
Where are colonial traces visible? How do they continue to have an impact today and shape our view of the port? From what different perspectives can port history be written, interpreted and appropriated?
Ursula Richenberger, Tania Mancheno and Martina Zimpel in conversation about how to deal with the colonial heritage of the Port of Hamburg.
Dr. Tania Mancheno is an associate researcher at the research center "Hamburg's (post-)colonial heritage" at the University of Hamburg. Her work and research includes decolonial and Afrocentric feminist theories, the European approach to colonial heritage and the global and transcontinental history of migration.
Ursula Richenberger is a cultural scientist and head of the department for education/communication/programs at the German Port Museum of the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation and a lecturer at Leuphana Lüneburg.
Martina Zimpel works in the Harburg District Office in the Department of Urban and Landscape Planning. There she is responsible for, among other things, the transformation of the Harburg inland port into a "new type of mixed-use area" with attractive residential quarters and high-quality businesses while preserving the historical structures. She is also part of the "Memorial to the Colonial Heritage of the City of Harburg" support group.
Moderation: Canê Çalar is an educational scientist and political educator from Hamburg who devotes her work to the critical analysis of structures and tries to highlight perspectives that are often excluded.
The event in cooperation with Ossara eV takes place as part of the KOSMOS Jupiter action week. Solidarity economy. Fair action. from May 2nd to 11th. KOSMOS brings perspectives of fair trade into dialogue with decolonial and transformative approaches for a sustainable economic system. In Jupiter. For the Earth. Be there!
