Classical Music
Laeiszhalle (Großer Saal), Hamburg

An evening of music full of sonic images, rich colors, and boundless imagination. In »Pictures at an Exhibition«, Mussorgsky paints the artworks of his friend Viktor Hartmann directly into the souls of his listeners – especially in Ravel’s colorful orchestral version. With it, he immortalizes the mostly lost works of the Russian painter in music. Sibelius’ »Night Ride and Sunrise« likewise sketches a dramatic scene with sharp brushstrokes, leading from deep darkness into radiant light.
At the heart of the concert is Philip Glass’s fascinating concerto for saxophone quartet and orchestra: a work of hypnotic energy and captivating transparency, in which minimalism and orchestral color continuously overlap in motion. The SIGNUM saxophone quartet, renowned for its virtuosity and stylistic versatility, explores the vast expressive range of its instruments – from warm, almost vocal tones to cutting brilliance.

At the podium, British conductor Harry Ogg – a welcome guest of the Symphoniker Hamburg – leads this program about the power of musical imagery and the intensity of sonic worlds.
