The cult Berlin band Karat celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. Fifty years – that’s two generations and almost a lifetime. There are only a few bands of note that can look back on such a long history. Most of them – let’s be honest – have long since become nostalgic cover bands of themselves.

Karat has taken a different path, its own path: one of constant searching, constant movement, and self-questioning. There have been a few breaks in this five-decade-long process. Musicians who had significantly shaped the band’s course and sound for years made way for new characters and new ideas. A permanent rejuvenation, a constant process of renewal. Those celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary today come from different generations and offer a wide spectrum of life experience. And yet, or rather, precisely because of this, the idea behind it has always remained young.

This unique band development as an open creative system is exemplified by the position of frontman, which Herbert Dreilich held for three decades. During this time, the band celebrated its greatest successes, and he essentially gave them a face. His son has been in his place for two decades now. He has long since silenced the skeptics and proven that he not only resembles his father physically, but has also inherited his creative energy. But Claudius Dreilich is by no means a copy. With his singing, his charisma, and his approachable extroversion, he has become an artist in his own right. Today, he is just as much the driving force behind the band as his father was for 30 years.
