Double bottom

Exhibition
Dezernat5, Schwerin

with works by Piet Biniek - Andrea Raak - Andreas M. Wiese

In literature and theater, a false bottom describes a type of ambiguity in which a statement or action has an obvious meaning , but can also carry a hidden, deeper meaning. In magic, the "false bottom" refers to a secret chamber or hidden compartment that allows objects to disappear or appear, with secret mechanisms that remain hidden from the audience.

It can also refer to security measures or reserves that take effect in the event of a problem, or its inverse, where the expression is used metaphorically to say that someone is not being completely honest or sincere, or that a situation is not as transparent as we think it is. When the ground sways or only seems to sway because we see double and can no longer trust our senses, this is a clear reference to our perception.

We are showing artistic positions from Schwerin's twin city Wuppertal that challenge the viewer and encourage them to come to their own conclusions and reflections. In times of fake news, polarization and the formation of opinions based on excerpts and partial truths, this is a highly topical subject.
