A turbulent spectacle of servant girls

Carlo Goldoni's comedy of errors, "The Servant of Two Masters," which premiered in 1746, follows in the tradition of the Commedia dell'arte. Through a series of entanglements, Truffaldina becomes the servant of two masters – promising double the food and income, but bringing with it at least as much chaos and stress (mini-jobs seem to be a tradition).

But it's not just the plot that's in disarray: confusion reigns within the acting troupe as well. Suddenly, two actresses playing Truffaldina appear on stage, the role of Blandina seems unclear, and even the question of who will play Tebaldo remains unanswered. The casting playfully demonstrates that servant and master roles are by no means gender-specific.
