Iberian Concert
Arabesque - The Miracle of Al-Andalus

Music, dance and poetry tell stories from Al-Andalus, medieval Spain ruled by the Moors: of the beauty of Moorish princesses or the full moon nights in the Alhambra, of the Palace of Joy or the interpreters of Toledo.

From the 8th to the 15th century, the Moors ruled a large part of the Iberian Peninsula, forcing Christians, Muslims, and Jews to coexist. This coexistence was naturally not entirely free of conflict, but there were also repeated long periods of genuine peace, characterized by tolerance and respect among religious groups, secured by treaties and alliances—and thus, these centuries of Moorish rule are referred to by historians and philologists as the "Miracle of Al-Andalus."

It was precisely the coexistence of cultures that brought about a special flowering of the sciences and arts that was unparalleled – a coexistence that made possible buildings like the Alhambra, the most subtle poetry and the most rousing music – and that gave rise to a special festival culture in which music, dance and poetry necessarily belonged together.

Concierto Iberico now brings this artistic blossoming to our stage: Experience a feast full of music—from the Renaissance Moresca to Ravel's Bolero—, the storyteller John Rogers with Hispano-Moorish stories by Irving and Nasruddin, as well as poems by Goethe. Look forward to the dance performances of Dani Niemietz, who will translate this coexistence of cultures into dance styles ranging from belly dancing to contemporary dance and flamenco dialect. In short: Experience the miracle of eight centuries of coexistence between three cultures and three arts on the stage of the Kulturkirche Altona!
