Jewish life in the history of Schwerin

Jewish life in the history of Schwerin

A tour through the old town.

You will experience a new tour by the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Foundation on "Jewish life in Schwerin's history".

Starting at the Schlachtermarkt, where the Jewish community of Schwerin inaugurated its first synagogue in 1773, the tour follows in the footsteps of Jewish merchant families. They were active in the textile, tobacco, grain and retail trades and shaped the life of the royal seat. The situation changed dramatically in 1933. Jews were mercilessly persecuted by the National Socialists and had to flee. Many of those who did not succeed were murdered. The new beginning after 1945 was difficult. Only the influx of Jews from the former Soviet Union gave the Schwerin community new impetus after 1990.
Today it has around 650 members.

The tour was created by Kerstin Eichhorst and Peter Scherrer.
