Visiting the fish-climbing area

Such installations as the Wehr at Geesthacht can significantly affect the habitat of fish. In the search for food and suitable spawning areas, fish often lay back several hundred kilometers. Therefore, species such as Neunaugen, salmon and eel are endangered. In order to enable the river Elbe to pass through and to use its natural hiking trails again, Vattenfall has set up a fish-raising facility at this location. The facility, commissioned in the summer of 2010, allows all approx. 100 species of Neun owls and fishes of the Elbe to pass through the tide and upper ocel, thus making a decisive contribution to a supraregional improvement in the fish and water ecology situation in the river system of the Elbe. The fish-climbing system, with a total length of 550 meters, consists of 49 individual pools, which are connected to the right and left by 1.20 meter wide slots and allow the fish to pass through. The 16 meter wide and nine meter long pools each have a minimum water depth of 1.75 meters. All in all, the facility is designed not only to enable them to immigrate to particularly large or small species such as salmon, but also to support the resettlement programs for the Atlantic Sturgeon in the Elbe promoted by the Federal Republic, which would have no prospect of success without the facility ,
