A question of time - exhibition opening on May 18
Sunday, 18/05/2025 / 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM / Freilichtmuseum Schwerin-Mueß
A pictorial journey through 35 years of MV. Impressive photographs with personal, documentary, precise views of the time after reunification.
Three renowned photographers, ten emotional chapters, 35 eventful years since German reunification. The special exhibition "A Question of Time - Photojournalistic Views on 35 Years of MV" in the Kunstkaten of the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum invites you on a visually powerful journey through time through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from May 18. The exhibition will open at 3 pm.
In around 50 impressive photographs, Ernst Höhne, Jens Büttner and Manfred Scharnberg take a deeply personal and documentarily precise look at upheavals, new beginnings and developments since the fall of communism. Curated by Volker Janke and creatively supported by Auslöser e.V., the exhibition combines classic reportage photography with historical archive images and current perspectives.
The works are divided thematically into emotional chapters such as "Opening", "Doubt", "Hope", "Loss" or "Diversity" - and invite visitors to put their own memories and feelings into perspective: Where was I back then? What has changed? What has remained?
The exhibition makes visible what often remains hidden: People, moments, protests, hopes - and the multi-layered stories of a federal state in transition.
Local NDR editor and lyricist Thomas Naedler will accompany the exhibition opening with songs and lyrics from his program "Frieda spielt..." (Frieda plays...)
"I am delighted that we can offer visitors a real exhibition highlight at the Mueß Open-Air Museum this summer. The photographs on display here offer different perspectives on 35 years of eventful history in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - from the upheavals of reunification to the present day. History is not conveyed abstractly here, but is brought to life in concrete moments, faces and situations - comprehensible and tangible for every generation," says Silvio Horn, Head of Cultural Affairs.
Since the Kunstkatens opened in 1977, museum staff have presented over one hundred special exhibitions at this location. "This will be the last show in the Kunstkaten for the time being," adds museum director Melanie Kramer. "Next year, the renovation of the barn will begin as part of the master plan."
The special exhibition will be on display from May 18 to September 30, 2025 in the Kunstkaten at the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum of Folklore.
